A Study on Pulmonary Changes of Irradiated Rats

Abstract
To evaluate pulmonary change of irradiated rats, a total of 30 rats was irradiated on whole body with single dose of 400 rads(A group) and 800rads(B group).
We observed cytosolic protein superoxide dismutase activity, lipoperoxide, and histopathological changes of lung at 5, 10, and 20th day after irradiation.
The results were as follows:
1. The ratio of wet weight of lung to body weight showed a tendency to increased par..allely to radiation dosage.
2. The cytosolic protein of lung in normal control group was 81. 8 ¡¾ 6. 2mg/g. In irradiation group, A and B, the highest value were 114.0¡¾19.9mg/g and 132.1¡¾18.8mg/g at 10 th day.
3. The cytosolic superoxide dismutase activity of lung in normal control group was 758. 8¡¾51.8U/g. In irradiation group, A and B, the highest value were 853.3¡¾69.7U/g, 981, 7¡¾ .88.3U/g at 10th day and then the activity was gradually decreased over the time.
4. The cytosolic lipoperoxide of lung in normal control group was 41.9¡¾4.9n Mol/g. In irradiation group, A and B, the highest value were 80.9¡¾7.5n Mol/g, 105.5¡¾18.7n Mol/g at 10th day.
5. The correlation between superoxide dismutase activiy and lipoperoxide(r=0.76), protein and superoxide dismutase activity(r=0.77), lipoperoxide and protein(r=0.80) were significant.
6. The histopathologic findings were peribronchiolar edema, vascular congestion, infiltration of inflammatory cell, thickening of blood vessel, and fibrosis of alveolar septa.
